linux mint starts to grey screen

I'm pretty new to linux so maybe I'm just doing something silly, but I set the "Digital-Logic-Sim.x86_64" file up as an executable, ran it, and was confronted with this screen, which I could not find a way around.

The only thing it does is fade lighter/darker grey as I move my mouse around.
Any idea what I might be doing wrong?

If you start it from a console window, do you see any log messages printed?
Which window manager do you use?
Are you using the system "directly", natively - or as a remote session, VNC, X11 screen forwarding or similar?
