Am I missing something? How do I do this?

I thought it'd be possible with a text effect, but those don't create the same impact, even if they can make text bounce.

The follow path itself doesn't rotate characters.

You can't import a vector with path alignment either.

So, honestly, I'm at a loss. How is it supposed to work?

Truth be told I haven't tested it yet as I don't have access to a computer now but the first workaround you can try if you don't need to animate the text is to do it in Inkscape, turn it into shape and import into Friction...

I'd pretty much prefer to retain text as text, and not convert it to an object.

I can't find a way to directly or indirectly doing it... the only way I found is the one I told you, converting it to path 😔

I've PRd a small SVG importer feature that renders text on path feature into "baked" outlines. That way at least you can design in Inkscape, don't loose the SVG text editing feature and be able to import/link into Friction. You can test it with these builds:
