Hello SMC team and community,
I want to share a project built directly on the SMC Malayalam corpus:
Granthom Rasavan (ഗ്രന്ഥം രസവാൻ) — a frequency-optimised native
keyboard layout for Malayalam.
What it does:
- Places characters by corpus frequency — most frequent characters on
home row strongest fingers
- Virama built into every consonant key — no separate virama keypress
for conjuncts
- Direct AltGr access to all six chillus — no ZWJ sequences
- 55% home row coverage vs ~30% for InScript
- ~10% fewer keystrokes than InScript on real Malayalam text
Built on: ~112 million character occurrences from the SMC corpus.
Your corpus data made this analysis possible — thank you.
Live simulator: https://ksjeshin.github.io/granthom-rasavan/
Repository: https://github.com/KSJeshin/granthom-rasavan
Would love feedback from the SMC community — especially from anyone
who types Malayalam extensively. Any thoughts on the design approach,
the corpus methodology, or the key placement decisions are welcome.
Happy to answer questions here or in the repository.
